Michael Volitich here. I’m a Creative Writing student at the University of Florida. The great thing about my course is that we’re allowed to explore different genres. When it comes to books, I enjoy reading thrillers, high-fantasies, sports biographies, and autobiographies. This term, I’m concentrating on sports writing, which is why I follow our varsity team’s games and try my best to do write-ups afterward each match. I’m not an expert yet when it comes to sports writing, but I’m willing to improve my skills further.
Writers have to be faithful readers first. When I’m at a loss for words, I go back to my growing stack of books to find inspiration. Sometimes, I also listen to sports podcasts to find better ways to communicate what happens in a game and how to showcase an athlete’s best points.
When there are long breaks, I make it a point to travel. I know it can be expensive, but you just need to plan well. As a writer, it’s a great way for me to explore the world and collect stories.
